Building a Model Rocket Gift Set

Posted on: October 26, 2011

Instead of giving just one plain gift for a birthday or holiday present, why not give an entire gift set? This is a great way to give a complete gift without worrying about others buying the missing pieces. What's the point of getting a new bike and having no one purchase the wheels? With a gift set the complete package is ready to go, no piecing together the rest of the parts.

Now you've decided to build a gift set, why not give something that is both educational, and exciting to build. At first many people don't believe there's such a thing as fun and educational. However, with model rockets children from ages 6 and up can get a great science lesson with model rockets.

The first step to building the model rocket gift set is to select the model rocket kit you will want to build around. There are a few different types of model rocket kits and some of the most popular are the Ready-to-Fly(RTF) and Easy-to-Assemble (E2X). These rockets take only a few minutes to assemble and are great for beginners or first time builders. Estes model rockets go up in Skill Level from these starting with Skill Level 1 and ending with Skill Level 5. Skill Level 1 model rocket kits take about an afternoon to construct while Skill Level 5 rockets may take up to a week for certain rocketeers. The perfect gift set rocket is a Launch Set that includes (in most sets) the launch controller, model rocket, and launch pad.

Next you will need to select which type of rocket engines will fit the model rocket. Only certain sized engines will fly with particular rockets, so it is important to read the specifications of the model rockets. Smaller engines are recommend for the first launch, after a few flights try larger engines and compare the results. Included with rocket engines are rocket engine igniters and igniter plugs.

Depending on the model rocket kit you select you may not need to purchase any additional supplies. However, some rocket kits do not come with launch pads and launch controllers. Larger rockets may need a launch rod that is taller and rocket engines that fly on E size motors need a larger launch pad and E launch controller. Additional supplies can be purchased like paint and decals to add a customized look to the model rocket.

Once these are all added together you have yourself a model rocket gift set, not to mention a very satisfying gift. The gift set is sure to be a hit among the party and your wallet will love spending under $40 (depending on items and quantity). This year don't go to a big box store and pick something generic off the shelf, build something from the heart.
